Our History

IUIH is a regional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Controlled Health Service (CCHS) based in South East Queensland.

IUIH was established in 2009 by the four CCHSs in South East Queensland to provide regional leadership for the health needs of Australia’s largest Indigenous population. IUIH’s role includes regional advocacy and leadership, and support for service planning, clinical quality and innovation, and creating economies of scale for network-wide services.

In 2025, IUIH celebrated 16 years of service to our Communities. During this time, IUIH’s regional network has expanded to include 17 multi-disciplinary primary healthcare clinics, with more services planned to manage the growing and dispersed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population of South East Queensland. Since 2009, the IUIH network has developed into an integrated regional ecosystem of services delivering health and social support services across South East Queensland. This ecosystem is known as the IUIH System of Care.

The IUIH System of Care has delivered unprecedented growth in service provision across the region. Key achievements include:

  • significant growth in clinics from 5 in 2009 to 17 in 2025.
  • growth in active South East Queensland Indigenous client numbers from 8,000 in 2009 to over 41,000 in 2025.
  • growth in completed annual Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander comprehensive Health Checks from 550 in 2009 to over 20,000 in 2025.
