Research governance on our terms

Researchers must obtain both ethics approval and research governance authorisation before commencing research.

Ethics approval from a Human Research Ethics Committee

• A Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) reviews research proposals to ensure that they are ethically acceptable and in accordance with relevant standards and guidelines.
• As we don’t operate our HREC we accept ethics review conducted by external HRECs.

Research and governance authorisation

• The IUIH Network Knowledge and Research Governance Committee is responsible for overseeing all research undertaken at, by, and with IUIH.
• Research governance authorisation is a two-step process. It helps to ensure that research is:
  • aligned with the priorities, values, and aspirations of Our People and Community
  • culturally responsive, ethical, and accountable;
  • conducted in accordance with relevant laws, policies, codes of conduct, and guidelines, relating to matters such as Indigenous Data Sovereignty, indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property, privacy, confidentiality, consent, professional standards, and contracts; and
  • can be supported by the people, resources, and services involved.

Monitoring and accountability

All research at IUIH is monitored to help ensure that research:

• remains accountable to Our People and Community and aligned with Community priorities, expectations, and approved agreements
• upholds Our Ways
• continues to meet ethical, cultural, and governance requirements
• delivers meaningful benefit
• remains consistent with protocols, approvals, and authorisations

Researchers are required to participate in monitoring and reporting processes and to inform IUIH of any changes or circumstances that may affect the research, its approvals, or its relationship with Community.
