Beyond the chair – a day in the life as a dentist at IUIH
For Nonica Ghimire, being a dentist at IUIH means stepping into days filled with purpose, connection and plenty of surprises.
“A typical day is busy, but it’s incredibly rewarding,” she says. From the moment she arrives, she knows she could be helping anyone: from someone with a painful broken tooth to a family coming in for routine check‑ups.
Her day can include anything from scale and cleans, filling and root canal treatments to extractions, dentures and mouthguard fittings.
“No two days are ever the same, and that’s one of the things I love most about working here,” Nonica adds.
But it’s not just the dentistry that shapes her work – it’s the relationships. Throughout each day, Nonica spends time yarning with patients, taking the time to listen, reassure and build genuine trust.
“At IUIH, it’s never just about teeth. It’s about making sure people feel safe, respected and cared for as a whole person,” she explains.
Supporting Mob at every stage of life is central to her role. Mornings might start with jarjum having their first dental check and afternoons often involve helping Elders manage long term oral health needs. Education is woven into almost every interaction.
“A big part of my work is prevention – helping families understand brushing, flossing, diet and how to keep their deadly smiles healthy long-term,” says Nonica.
Her journey into dentistry was deeply connected to her belief in the link between oral health and overall wellbeing. She has been working with Mob since early 2009, and the work continues to hold deep meaning for her.
“I became a dentist because I wanted to make a real difference,” she reflects.
“Working with Mob is especially meaningful because I know the gaps that exist. Being able to offer culturally safe care and build strong relationships is something I’m really proud of.”
For anyone considering joining the IUIH team, Nonica offers heartfelt advice:
“Come in with an open heart and a willingness to listen and learn,” she says.
“If you’re passionate about making a difference and want to work in a supportive, values driven team, this is a deadly place to be – with pretty much 100% job satisfaction.”
