Mental Health and Wellbeing
Mental health, social and emotional wellbeing supports for our Community.
Across South East Queensland, we deliver culturally and clinically capable mental health and alcohol and other drug services that respond to the diverse needs of our Community. These include individual and group therapeutic supports, social and psychosocial services, homelessness outreach, Staying Deadly – Mental Health Our Way, and culturally informed gambling help services. Our supports strengthen healing, resilience and suicide prevention outcomes for our Community.
IUIH employs a skilled transdisciplinary team to provide wraparound and coordinated care. This includes mob supporting mob, social workers, psychologists, counsellors, psychiatrists, and other professionals with expertise across mental health, and social and emotional wellbeing. Care is flexible, relational and responsive, ensuring people are supported at the pace and in the way that works for you.
Mental Health & Wellbeing services are integrated within IUIH’s comprehensive primary healthcare System of Care. This means that anyone accessing mental health and wellbeing services and supports can also access the full range of GP, allied health, dental and other services available through the IUIH network of 17 clinics across the region, depending on their needs.
Our integrated model of care has a focus on:
- building the capacity of individuals and families to work through challenges and improve their wellbeing through ongoing, targeted and case-managed services
- providing targeted, evidence-based and therapeutic treatment, including counselling, psychological services, human service support and specific treatments for alcohol and other drug issues.
- Walking alongside people through coordinated, wraparound care that promotes healing, self‑determination and connection to culture, family and community

Staying Deadly
Our Staying Deadly services are Mob-led and Mob-centred, providing holistic, relational, and team-based supports for Mob.
We prioritise building genuine relationships through taking the time to connect, listen and get to know people. Our approach respects each person’s individual needs, preferences, strengths and circumstances, and is guided by principles of self‑determination, empowerment and recovery.
We work alongside people as partners in their care, supporting them to identify what matters most and to develop meaningful, personalised goals for their mental health and wellbeing. We recognise each person as the expert in their own life and honour their knowledge, experiences and right to make decisions about their future. Our role is to walk with people clearly outlining options, sharing information in accessible ways, and supporting informed choice while creating safe, culturally affirming spaces that foster confidence, resilience and healing at each person’s own pace.
Staying Deadly Mobile Outreach Brisbane (MOB)
The Staying Deadly MOB team offers regular outreach support to Community across Brisbane. This is a short-term service that aims to link Community with a range of available long-term supports that create a sense of safety and stability.
Support provided includes:
- yarning and healing spaces – meeting Community where they feel safe and connecting them to healing spaces, where they can share stories and reconnect with culture
- practical assistance – navigating through social, support and health systems
- skill building – strengthening confidence, and developing coping strategies and employment readiness
- connection with Community – connecting with Mob, local events and cultural activities
- holistic health supports – connecting with health-care clinics and the integrated services available through the IUIH network and elsewhere.
Staying Deadly hubs
Staying Deadly hubs are a place for Mob to connect and to belong – a place for people to gather, yarn, laugh, heal and socialise. They provide a safe and supportive environment where clients can explore a range of options and actively participate in collective decision-making around which care and supports might be right for them, right now.
Staying Deadly Hubs provide spaces which are culturally safe and welcoming. We intentionally create an environment where clients can develop relationships with the Staying Deadly Hub team and feel supported by a culturally responsive, transdisciplinary workforce that provides culturally safe care.
Our Staying Deadly Hubs provide mental health and wellbeing support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults and young people aged 15 years and over. We empower Mob to make their own decisions and to build on their own strengths – determining their own journey. No matter how a person is referred to the Hub, our aim is to reduce barriers, improve accessibility and provide a warm handover to more suitable services where appropriate.
Staying Deadly | headspace Deception Bay
Staying Deadly | headspace Deception Bay is a place for young Mob to feel safe and to belong.
Young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mob aged 12-25 years, as well as their friends and family, can access services and supports with a focus on four key areas – mental health and well-being, physical and sexual health, work and study, and alcohol and drugs.
Gambling Help service
Our Gambling Help service provides culturally safe support for Mob and their families experiencing gambling harm.
We understand gambling can impact many areas of life, including social and emotional wellbeing, family relationships, housing, finance, employment and connection to Community. Our service is here to walk alongside people in a safe, respectful and non-judgemental way.
Supports Mob can access include:
- counselling and therapeutic support – we can connect in a way that’s preferred, either face-to-face, over the phone or via video call
- assistance with self-exclusion to gambling venues or platforms
- education around gambling harm and healthy coping strategies
- advocacy and care-coordination to meet wellbeing needs
- community education programs
