For our Mob, maintaining good eye health is an important part of overall health and wellbeing. Many eye conditions develop gradually and may not cause noticeable symptoms in their early stages. Regular eye checks can help identify concerns before they affect vision and quality of life.

Did you know that 80% of vision loss is preventable or treatable when detected early? Regular optometry visits are the only way to thoroughly check.

Five ways to protect your eyes

We encourage Mob to take simple steps to look after their vision:

1. Book a regular eye check with an optometrist

Many serious eye conditions can be successfully treated if detected early. Regular eye checks with an optometrist are one of the most effective ways to protect your sight. This means every year for anyone with diabetes and every 2-3 years for everyone else, even if you have no concerns about your vision. Jarjum can get their first eye check at 5 years old.

2. Wear sunglasses

Protect your eyes from harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation by wearing sunglasses that meet Australian standards for UVA and UVB protection.

3. Eat for eye health

A healthy diet rich in leafy green vegetables, antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids can help support long-term eye health.

4. Use protective eyewear

Whether you’re working, gardening, or doing DIY projects around the home, safety glasses from a hardware store can help prevent injuries.

5. Limit eye strain from screens

Extended use of computers, tablets and smartphones can contribute to digital eye strain. Taking regular breaks, maintaining good posture and ensuring your eyes are checked can help reduce discomfort.

Eye health matters at every age

Good vision supports learning, employment, independence and connection to family and community. Regular eye care can help children succeed at school, support adults in daily activities, and assist older people to maintain their quality of life.

Take the opportunity to make your eye health a priority. If it has been a while since your last eye check, consider booking an appointment with your friendly optometrist and encourage your family members to do the same. You can do so through your local clinic: iuih.org.au/clinics

Looking out for your eyes today can help protect your vision for the future.
