Blak and Proud: Empowering Rainbow Mob

News
2 mins

IUIH is proud to partner with UQ’s Poche Centre for Indigenous Health, Brisbane ATSICHS, and 2Spirits for Blak and Proud – an Indigenous-led and governed project focused on improving the health and wellbeing of LGBTQIA+ Brotherboy Sistergirl Mob living in South East Queensland.

This project is about listening to Rainbow Mob. It creates space to yarn about lived experiences, including what feels strong, what feels unsafe, and what could be done better in health services.

Your voice matters—and it can help shape more inclusive, culturally safe care, so we can proudly move towards a future where all Mob feel seen, respected and celebrated

What is Blak and Proud?

Blak and Proud aims to improve visibility, understanding, and health service delivery for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander LGBTQIA+ Brotherboy Sistergirl people. The team will work towards establishing an Australian-first “BLAK Rainbow” ACCHS health service accreditation program, which prioritises self-determination, lived experience, and community governance.

By partnering in Blak and Proud, IUIH is supporting research that recognises the strength, diversity, and pride of Rainbow Mob, to promote LGBTQIA+ health and wellbeing. Blak and Proud is an important step towards creating services that are safer, more inclusive, and shaped by Community voices.

Who can take part?

You may be eligible to take part if you:

  • Are Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander
  • Identify anywhere within the LGBTQIA+ Brotherboy Sistergirl community
  • Are aged 16 years or older
  • Access health services within South East Queensland

What does taking part involve?

Participants are invited to have a yarn with the research team about their experiences.

These yarns are:

  • Voluntary – it’s always your choice
  • Confidential – your privacy is respected
  • Culturally safe – led by Indigenous and culturally informed researchers
  • Flexible – yarns can happen in ways and places that feel right for you
